unPaper vs Beautiful.ai

The same idea about design rules, in two different places

Beautiful.ai is the closest thing to unPaper's actual thesis on the market. Its value is not that it generates slides — it is that its slides carry design rules: add a fourth item to a three-item layout and the layout re-arranges itself rather than letting you produce something crowded and ugly. That is a genuinely good idea, executed well, and it is the same conviction unPaper is built on — that most bad decks are bad because nobody enforced a rule, not because nobody had taste.

The difference is where the rules live. Beautiful.ai's rules live inside a hosted editor: you work in their application, on their servers, and the smartness is applied as you type. unPaper's rules live in the prompt and in the HTML — a named catalogue of layouts, budgets for words and bullets, and a worked example — so the rules are applied by whichever AI you already use, and the file that comes back carries them with it.

That relocation is the whole product. It means the rules reach the assistant your employer approved instead of requiring a new vendor; it means nothing is uploaded; and it means the enforcement survives in the output file rather than only inside an editor session. It also means unPaper cannot do what a live editor does — there is no canvas that reflows as you drag.

Use Beautiful.ai if…

  • You want a canvas that re-lays-out live while you type, which is the thing they do best.
  • Several people need to edit the same deck at the same time.
  • Your organization wants a hosted, centrally administered template library with seats and roles.
  • You need named compliance certifications on the vendor holding your content.
  • You would rather buy the discipline as a subscription than carry it in a prompt.

Use unPaper if…

  • The rules matter but the hosting does not — you want the discipline without a new vendor in the path.
  • Your content cannot go to a third party, or explaining why it did would cost you more than the deck is worth.
  • You want the enforcement to survive in the file itself, not only inside an editor.
  • You already have an AI assistant and want it to write the slides.
  • You want to try it without a card and without a countdown.
